Beautiful traditional and contemporary stringed instruments hand-crafted

in the Scottish Borders

About Mark Mawby

Despite having a degree in Classical music (first study classical guitar), Mark has been addicted for many years to traditional music played on the fiddle and mandolin (and related instruments such as mandola, bouzouki and guitar).

As a working musician, needing high quality instruments at an affordable price, he has constructed his own, consolidating his joinery skills (a trade in which he is qualified) and self-taught experience with an excellent two-year course in Musical Instrument Technology in Manchester.

Recently, he has concentrated his making on mandolins and fiddles for the discerning folk musician — though they're equally good for classical and jazz players. He also regularly makes bouzoukis, mandolas and citterns.

What else is there to say?! He has played traditional music (from all over the place for too many years to mention), fiddle, mandolin and guitar being the main instruments, although he's flirted with whistle, flute and pipes. He also plays classical guitar, and still gets the occasional gig.

For 18 months Mark was based in the workshops of a Camphill Community in West Yorkshire, where the members and students of the community were a constant help and inspiration — thanks to them all.

In December 2010 he relocated to a small village near Duns, in the beautiful Scottish Borders.
